Functionalist Settlement Baba — Zastávka MHD U Matěje, Prague

A guided walk through the functionalist settlement Baba with Petr Sýkora from Prahy Neznámé.

The guide will introduce the origins of functionalist architecture and explain why this style was so popular in Czechia. You will learn what experimental housing means and how Prague's Baba differs from other European Werkbund settlements - those in Stuttgart, Wrocław, Zurich, Vienna, and Brno. The tour will focus on selected houses and their original residents: Baba was home not only to politicians, state officials, and businessmen, but also to artists such as Pavel Janák, Ladislav Sutnar, and Cyril Bouda.

Participants will examine fine architectural details of individual villas, which reveal whether a house was designed by someone from the older generation of functionalists (Josef Gočár) or the younger generation, Ladislav Žák. The iconic ruin of Baba, which gave the settlement its name, will also be discussed.
