Nine Circles of Hell

The Czech-Cambodian romantic drama "Nine Circles of Hell" was created in the 1980s as one of the co-production films within cultural cooperation with countries of the Global South. Czech physician Tomáš arrives in Cambodia in the late 1960s, falls in love with dancer Khemy, and marries her despite her parents' opposition. A series of state coups destroys their relationship. When Tomáš returns to the country after the genocide of the Cambodian population under the Khmer Rouge regime, he finds only the ruins of his former life.

The programme is held in cooperation with the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences with the support of the Academy of Sciences and the Strategy AV 21 programme. An introductory address will be given by Tomáš Petrů from the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Chea Sopheap from the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, Royal University of Phnom Penh - in English only.
