Two Worlds Connected: Emergency and Villa Colonies on Žižkov
Tramvajová zastávka Ohrada, Prague
A guided walk through the early Czechoslovak Republic era, when housing was urgently needed for an influx of new workers. The route reveals how grand villas and emergency colonies for poorer residents were built side by side on Žižkov.
The programme explores the role of housing cooperatives that helped members acquire their own homes, and the modest conditions of those who could not afford them. The walk contrasts two First Republic colonies - Domov and Vlastní silou - and recalls the image of family houses with gardens that once shaped the neighbourhood's character.
At the end, participants will stop in the adjacent park to learn about the origin of the name Na Krejcárku and what was lost there in the 1970s.
