Chungking Express

Wong Kar-wai's Hong Kong film Chungking Express is widely regarded in film circles as a cult classic. This love story with a crime subplot unfolds at a rapid pace, yet is deliberately loose in its narrative structure - the cinematography relies almost entirely on handheld camera work, a signature of the director's formally unconventional style.

The film consists of two separate stories: both follow police officers dealing with the departure of their partners, and their paths intersect with people on society's margins - drug smugglers, snack bar vendors. Lightly sketched fates form a stylized study of loneliness amid crowds, the inability to communicate, and unfulfilled love.

At the same time, the film celebrates the frenetic energy of overcrowded Hong Kong - the "city of a thousand immigrants", as the former British colony was once nicknamed.
