ŠRÁMY_Closer

Šrámy is a triptych by choreographer Stéphanie NDuhira exploring intergenerational trauma - how violence and pain are transmitted across generations and become embodied memories. The first part is titled Šrámy / la débattue, the second Šrámy / Děti z bakelitu. The third part, Closer, was created in collaboration with the Cie Pieds Perchés ensemble and Marina Mezzogiorno-Brown.

Lead performer Marina Mezzogiorno-Brown was born in 1988 in Los Angeles to a queer mother whose life was profoundly marked by the AIDS epidemic. Through motifs of disco, liberation, and unspeakable loss, she weaves collective experiences of grief with her own encounters with death. Drawing from the club culture of the 1970s and 80s - a period of newly found queer freedom alongside shame, fear, sorrow, and rage in the face of AIDS - she asks how to honor the dead with the joy they deserve after such profound pain. The need to be seen - because invisibility meant death - fundamentally transformed that world.

Šrámy / Closer combines costume design, new circus, suspended rope acrobatics, and physical theatre with interviews capturing personal memories, weaving a story of love, pain, and the healing power of remembrance and collective dancing in clubs.
