APHKHAZETI — Choreonicon

The Georgian State Ballet APHKHAZETI brings to Prague the programme Choreonicon — a unique dance and music performance featuring 52 dancers, a live orchestra, and a choir. The ensemble was officially founded in 1931 and has nearly a century of history. War in Abkhazia and Russian occupation of the region forced the artists to relocate to Tbilisi in 1992, where the ensemble preserved its character and distinctive style. In March 2021, young artistic director Bachan Chanturia, former principal soloist of the Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili, created new choreography for traditional dances and invited leading Georgian composers to prepare original musical accompaniment — thus the Choreonicon programme was born. The performance combines traditional Georgian music, ballet, and contemporary dance elements, offering dances from various regions of Georgia. The performance lasts approximately 2 hours. The show takes place in Nova Spirála at the Prague Exhibition Grounds, which features a unique circular hall with 360° seating and a rotating stage — performers emerge directly from the audience and move in close proximity to spectators. This is the ensemble's only concert in Prague.
