Schubert's Sonata in C minor, D 958 was composed two months before the composer's death in September 1828 and dedicated to the piano virtuoso Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The key of C minor places it within the tradition of dramatic works by Mozart and Beethoven - yet Schubert transformed it into his own, original synthesis.

Brahms' late piano works, represented by opus numbers 116-119, were created between 1891 and 1893. These are four sets of shorter compositions whose melodic character and concentrated form make them something like abstract instrumental songs in the characteristically Brahmsian piano style. Brahms returned to solo piano only in his later years - after his early sonatas, which Robert Schumann described as veiled symphonies.
