Happy Together brought Kar-Wai Wong his first major international recognition - at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, he won the Best Director award. The story of a homosexual couple whose loving and seemingly solid relationship falls apart without either of them knowing why was partly shocking in its openness at the time, yet fascinated audiences with its original narrative style that boldly ignored any established rules.
