Happy Together

Two men set out on a long journey - and suddenly nothing is as it was, and instead there is what no one wanted. On the other side of the world, in a rented room in the middle of Buenos Aires, Lai Yiu-Fai wonders what he actually wanted to be there.

The film Happy Together brought Kar-Wai Wong his first major international recognition: at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, it won the Best Director award. The story of a homosexual couple whose relationship falls apart without either of them knowing why was then partly shocking in its openness - and at the same time fascinated by a narrative style that ostentatiously ignored any established rules.
