Summer with Monika

In his early film, Bergman continues his focused examination of emotional relationships, this time exploring the immature love of barely-adult young people from the lower social strata of Stockholm's suburbs. The temperamental, cheeky Monika enchants and seduces the timid, shy Harry, and together they embark on a romantic escape by boat from the city to an island. The blissful intoxication soon fades, and the couple, stripped of their illusory dreams, is thrown back into harsh reality.
