Ernst Ingmar Bergman (14 July 1918, Uppsala - 30 July 2007, Fårö) was a Swedish film and theatre director, screenwriter, and author. Over a career spanning six decades he directed more than 60 films and staged over 170 theatre productions, exploring faith, loneliness, and the fragility of human relationships in a style that made him one of the most influential filmmakers in cinema history. His long creative partnerships with actors such as Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow, and with cinematographer Sven Nykvist, gave his work an instantly recognisable signature.
In December 2024, the Brussels opera La Monnaie hosted the world premiere of the opera Fanny and Alexander by composer Mikael Karlsson, created based on Bergman's 1982 film of the same name; the production was directed by Ivo Van Hove.
From February to April 2025, the Seattle cinema SIFF Cinema presented a retrospective of ten restored Bergman films titled The Magic Lantern of Ingmar Bergman.
The opera Fanny and Alexander was broadcast live on the channels Mezzo Live, medici.tv, and Auvio; the radio broadcast on the station Klara took place in January 2025.
