The musical film Michael traces the career of the future King of Pop from his early days in the family group Jackson Five, where he demonstrated the greatest talent from the start, despite being the youngest member. The increasingly popular group is led with an iron fist by father Joe (Colman Domingo) — perhaps too iron a fist for the fragile Michael.

When music producers begin to circle around Jackson Five, everyone realizes that Michael is the most valuable element of the group, and the boldest start talking about his solo career. Joe, a despotic father and tough manager rolled into one, won't hear of it — but Michael himself dreams of going his own way.
