Being Marlene Dietrich
Havlíček Gardens (Grébovka), Prague
Marlene Dietrich is synonymous with freedom - whether in love, sex, creativity, fashion, or politics. Sternberg, Remarque, Hemingway, Cocteau, Piaf, Brecht - they were all her friends.
The performance asks how she and her contemporaries dealt with war, dictatorship, and questions of sexual freedom. Emigration, Hitler's ban, nostalgia, constant professional refinement: how did she think, how did she act? A woman who went against the grain, an artist who broke stereotypes, a figure whom people either loved or hated. From costumes through acting to work with light, she was driven by a desire for perfection and a taste that never failed her.
The phenomenon of Marlene Dietrich against the backdrop of the most turbulent period of the last century serves as a mirror to our time and to ourselves.
The production was created in collaboration with and with financial support from AMU.
