Eight years after the first Dealer, director Nicolas Winding Refn returns to the world of Copenhagen's underworld. The second installment loosely follows previous events and this time focuses on Tonny - a small-time dealer and simpleton played by Mads Mikkelsen. He returns from prison and immediately finds himself caught up in petty and major thefts, scams, and settling of scores. At the same time, he tries to please his strict father, known in the underworld as the Plumber, his partner O is preparing for his wedding, and Tonny discovers he is a father.

Refn this time sets aside genre conventions. Instead of the energetic storytelling of the first film, he delves deeper into the heart of Copenhagen's underworld and examines the people behind its worn faces. The second Dealer thus even more thoroughly demythologizes the image of gangsters offered by American genre films - instead of mafia nobility or the slickness of Hollywood thrillers, Refn takes viewers into nightclubs, auto shops, and cheap brothels whose inhabitants are broken lives, small-time crooks, and amateurs. Into this setting he places a story about deeply buried emotions that culminates in tragedy of classical proportions.

Mads Mikkelsen plays the central role of Tonny, for whom this character represented his very first opportunity in a feature film. By returning to it, he confirms both his acting talent and his taste for demanding roles - from an unknown young man he has since become an international star.
