In the mid-1980s, an elegant doctor named Ingrid works at a remote provincial hospital. Trapped in an exhausted marriage and stalled career, she spends most of her time with her patients - delivering babies and ending unwanted pregnancies. She also performs sterilizations on Romani women without their full understanding of the consequences.

A new friendship with a young hospital attendant named Agata prompts Ingrid to see things differently and begin questioning the rules she has long followed without thought. Ivan Ostrochovský's drama opens an unresolved chapter of Czechoslovak history, when the state decided who could have children.
