Zizkov Homesteads

Zizkov Homesteads is a walking tour through the area beyond the former Prague fortifications - places known as Zizkov since 1877, previously called Vinicna Hora or Weinberge in German. The route leads to old homesteads, inns, vineyards and chapels, many of which are now remembered only by local names or fragments of buildings buried under later construction.

Participants will traverse Zizkov in typical fashion - zigzagging up and down. The walk begins at Olsanske Square and passes the former Bezovka inn with its pond and garden, Havlickovo Square with the town hall, and continues to the Jaroslav Seifert memorial - the poet and Nobel Prize winner who was born on what is now Borijov Street. Along the way from the neo-Gothic Church of St. Prokop, the route passes the Reissmanku homestead, Dolni Sklenarku and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary at the site of today's Jara Cimrman Theatre.

In the lower and oldest part of Zizkov await the Subrka homestead, the Husnik and Hausler factories, sites of the last vineyards and the Velka Proutková homestead connected to the construction of municipal baths. At the site of Velka Hrabovka stood a paper goods factory; in the neighbouring Miranka homestead and farm court today sits the Ponec Theatre. The route further includes the homesteads Cerveny lis, Hrabovka, Krenovka, Komotovka, Subertka and Dirixka. The walk ends at Winston Churchill Square.
