Veselí Dyers – The Magic of Blue in Moravian Slovakia
Městské muzeum Veselí nad Moravou, Veselí nad Moravou
The exhibition "Veselí Dyers: The Magic of Blue in Moravian Slovakia" runs at the Veselí nad Moravou Municipal Museum from March 20 to July 26, 2026. Veselí nad Moravou was historically a city of dyers – the dyeing craft could not be practiced without running water, and the Morava River in this town was more than welcoming to dyers. Several Veselí families devoted themselves to both ordinary cloth dyeing and the more demanding craft of fine dyeing. The families of Hanáks, Dlabalů, Tichých, Markytánů, and Gerstbergers, from whom the craft was taken over by the Joch family from Strážnice, and many others, beautified fabrics for nearby and distant markets throughout Moravian Slovakia for decades. Veselí indigo printing thus adorned folk costumes not only in the villages around Strážnice and Veselí nad Moravou or in the Horňácko region thanks to markets in Velká nad Veličkou. The exhibition explores the history of dyeing in Veselí nad Moravou and the contemporary work of indigo-printing workshops in Strážnice and Olešnice. Today, indigo printing no longer adorns only folk costumes – it has become part of culture from home furnishings to use by fashion designers. The exhibition also includes accompanying events, workshops, and educational programs for children, students, and the general public.
