Food as Ritual
Pragovka gallery, Prague
free entry
Pragovka Gallery presents the group exhibition Food as Ritual, running from May 14 to August 20, 2026. The opening reception took place on Wednesday, May 13 at 6 p.m., alongside the openings of the exhibitions Imago, Killing the Flowers Won't Delay Spring, and Perfect World.
The exhibition stems from the experience of gathering over food, coffee, or wine, which transforms an everyday moment into a shared ritual. The project views food not merely as a means of nourishment, but as a cultural, social, and personal phenomenon. It explores its diverse forms: from sensory pleasure and daily habits through intimate rituals to social norms and pressures that often manifest through food. Beyond the positive aspects associated with memories, care, and sharing, it also opens up moments of judgment, control, and stigmatization.
The exhibiting artists are members of the Polévka na Baru collective: Markéta Feltová, Michael Franče, Barbora Knobová, Yvona Kovářová, Michaela Munzarová, and Lucie Vobr. The collective emerged from a reunion of friends who studied at the Sutnarova Academy in Plzeň – a renewed dialogue after ten years evolved into continuous collaboration reflecting their diverse artistic paths and shared connections. The creators approach the theme through their own experience and various media. Characteristic of the collective's presentation is a participatory happening – cooking soup for the audience, which becomes part of the ritual. Exhibition curator: Magdaléna Nešněrová.
The gallery is open Tuesday–Friday 12:00–20:00, Saturday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays. Admission is free.
