Exhibition "Prague on Fire" in the Novomlýnská Water Tower

Novomlýnská vodárenská věž, Prague

The exhibition "Prague on Fire" is a permanent multimedia exhibition of the Museum of the City of Prague located in the Novomlýnská water tower, which was opened to the public for the first time in its history following a major renovation in 2017. The tower in Baroque style dates from 1658 and supplied water to the lower New Town until 1877. The exhibition uses new media – video mapping, animations, video art, and virtual reality – to present the age-old threat of fire to Prague, the role of water towers, and stories of Prague's firefighting history. Period images from the collections of the Museum of the City of Prague are combined with contemporary visual language. A hyperrealistic immersive installation transports visitors into the interior of the burning National Theatre. Animated conversations accompany stories of Prague firefighters and the evolution of fire-fighting technology. The reward for climbing the entire height of the tower (178 steps, 5 floors) is a view from the belvedere on the top floor with twelve windows at a height of 30 meters. The tower is considered Prague's oldest observation tower from a historical perspective. The museum is not wheelchair accessible. Guided tours with commentary in Czech are available every Saturday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, and 16:00, free with a purchased ticket.
