The Princess Diaries

Shy high school student Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) discovers she is the heir to the throne of the small European kingdom of Genovia. Instead of a fairy-tale dream, she faces a crash course in etiquette under the guidance of her grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews), a complete makeover, and relentless media attention. Sacrificing her own freedom for the role of princess proves to be anything but easy.

Director Garry Marshall's The Princess Diaries catapulted the then nineteen-year-old Anne Hathaway to stardom - much like Pretty Woman did for Julia Roberts a decade earlier. The film is remembered as one of the best teen comedies, largely thanks to its legendary makeover scene, in which a team of hairdressers tames Mia's curls at the cost of several broken combs.
