In Lourdes

A mountain village on the southwestern slopes of the Pyrenees transformed into a pilgrimage site of global significance after 1858, when a 14-year-old girl claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a remote cave. Today, six million visitors arrive in Lourdes annually, making it France's second-most visited city after Paris. It is a place half sacred, half commercial: alongside processions of the sick and dying stand shops selling bottled holy water and Virgin Mary souvenirs.

The film follows a diverse group of pilgrims seeking miracles - accident victims, the terminally ill, an obese and bullied teenager, and a group of aging Parisian prostitutes - accompanied by a small army of caregivers.

The film reflects on human capacity for empathy and hope, and what religious faith means in the face of profound suffering.
