12 Monkeys

Terry Gilliam's film 12 Monkeys is on the surface a story about time travel, but in a broader sense a statement about freedom and the struggle of the individual against the system. In the year 2035, decimated by a deadly virus, prisoner James Cole, played by Bruce Willis, is sent back in time to stop the spread of the infection.

The premise of a pandemic virus remains vivid in viewers' memory, but even more pressing are the themes of seeking truth and the question of whom to trust. The film today feels more relevant than at the time of its creation - which is the best possible testament for a sci-fi film: it anticipated its time and the world is only now catching up.
