They call him the Driver. By day he works as a film stunt driver; by night he makes extra money driving for criminal gangs - he doesn't care what the job is, just speeds through the darkness with police cars on his tail.

Shannon is his mentor and manager, offering him to film directors and thieves alike. He plans to buy a car that would allow the Driver to compete in professional racing, and suggests Bernie Rose - a local wealthy man with questionable sources of income - as an investor.

Into the solitary and internally conflicted Driver's life comes an unexpected neighbor, Irene. But her husband returns from prison, the situation grows complicated, and the Driver, to protect himself and Irene, resorts to the only thing he truly knows how to do - step hard on the gas.
