Tango Evening: Tango Salon & Tango Mio
Retrospective of Jana Boková
Tango Salon / Jana Boková / 2004 / 70 min.
The film captures Buenos Aires during an economic crisis, when the daily suffering of its inhabitants paradoxically sparked one of the greatest tango revivals. The film can be read in two ways: as a documentary about the Buena Vista Social Club ensemble shot in the legendary Confitería Ideal dance hall, or as a story about tango as an act of resistance – a refusal to become a victim of poverty. Jana Boková captures the lives of tango lovers who share their stories of love, family, and homeland, and shows how politics and aesthetics are inseparably linked.
My Tango / Jana Boková / 2004 / 94 min.
A documentary fiction about the historical and social background of Argentine tango featuring Carlos Saura and other musical stars.
"Tango became my great love. Today, when I dance, I sometimes feel that magical sensation, as if something was really working during filming. Dancing tango is most like filmmaking for me – both have become my life's passion." Jana Boková
