On the Motorway to Prehistory

Jihočeské muzeum v Českých Budějovicích, České Budějovice

The exhibition "On the Motorway to Prehistory – Northern Prácheňsko as a Communication Corridor Through the Millennia" is on display at the main building of the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice (Dukelská 1) from April 29 to September 20, 2026. It is based on the largest archaeological research project in the region, conducted in 2021–2023 during the construction of the D4 motorway. The research yielded a number of unique finds, many of which are being exhibited for the first time. The exhibition presents the landscape of northern Písecko as an important communication corridor that connected different cultural spheres over millennia. While in some periods it was a peripheral area, in others – particularly during the Iron Age – it was home to a stable and vibrant settlement linked to the wider European sphere. The movement of people, raw materials, goods, and ideas is the central theme of the exhibition. The museum also offers an educational programme for primary and secondary school students, which in an interactive format introduces the life of people in prehistory, the significance of archaeological finds, and the protection of cultural heritage. The educational programme lasts 60–90 minutes and costs 40 CZK per person (teacher supervision free).
