The MXM Phenomenon

Severočeská galerie výtvarného umění v Litoměřicích, Litoměřice

The exhibition The MXM Phenomenon at the North Bohemian Gallery of Fine Arts in Litoměřice commemorates the legendary Prague Gallery MXM – the first private Czech gallery of the post-revolutionary era, founded in 1990 by Litoměřice-born lawyer JUDr. Tomáš Procházka. The exhibition was prepared for the 35th anniversary of its founding and offers a view of the work of artists who shaped Czech visual art after 1989. Gallery MXM brought together artists from the groups Tvrdohlaví and Pondělí and independent figures such as Jiří Kovanda, Jan Merta, Antonín Střížek, Petr Pastrňák and Vladimír Skrepl. It regularly presented itself at international art fairs and played an important role in promoting Czech art of the 1990s abroad. Following the tragic death of Tomáš Procházka, Jan Černý took over the gallery's direction and continued the established line until 2002, when the gallery premises were flooded by floods. The exhibition presents a selection of works by artists associated with the gallery's programme and conveys the atmosphere of the newly gained freedom. Works connected with prominent personalities and artistic groups of that era are on display. The renowned Czech painter Stanislav Diviš appeared at the opening. The exhibition also includes the work Solarium by Milena Dopitová from the Fait Gallery collection. The exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 to 17 in the main building of the gallery on Michalská Street and will run until 31 May 2026.
