Description was written before the event

"I have seen comic films and dazzling ones. I have seen only three great films: Buster Keaton's Sherlock Holmes, Chaplin's The Gold Rush, and Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. When I reread these notes (October 1929), I add: Buñuel's An Andalusian Dog. Here we encounter the style of the soul." So wrote Jean Cocteau as he himself entered the field of cinema.

Chaplin drew inspiration for The Gold Rush from a book about the California Gold Rush. In 1941, on the occasion of a renewed premiere, he composed music for the film and recorded the commentary himself. According to his will, this adapted version is the definitive presentation of the work - the one with which he intended to remain forever in the minds of viewers.
