Jan Čmejla (Piano Recital) — Kino Vesmír, Ostrava

A piano recital by Jan Čmejla, winner of the 2025 International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig. The programme spans from Baroque to the 20th and 21st centuries.

The evening opens with Jean-Philippe Rameau's Suite in G minor, originally written for harpsichord and published in his Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin (1726-1727). Its eight movements alternate wit, inventiveness, and Baroque elegance.

Follows Frédéric Chopin's Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante - a combination of two originally separate works: the dreamy Andante spianato from 1834 and the virtuosic Grande Polonaise brillante from 1830-1831.

The second half features 20th and 21st century music. Adam Skoumal's Berceuse (2020), inspired by Chopin's work of the same name, and a selection from György Ligeti's Études, which blend modern virtuosity with a distinctive compositional language. The evening concludes with Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 7 in B flat major, Op. 83 (1942), a work reflecting the atmosphere of the war years.
