Shirley Valentine is the name of the girl that a forty-year-old mother and wife of a respectable citizen no longer is. She focuses mainly on keeping her family's life in Liverpool running smoothly, but the dreams and desires of the girl she once was remain within her.

She gives in to her friend's suggestion and does something unexpected - she takes a holiday to Greece, where vineyards flourish. There a new life and new adventure begin for her - everything she had already considered lost.
