J. D. Zelenka and G. Allegri: Miserere — Kostel Panny Marie pod řetězem, Prague

The programme, performed by Ensemble Inégal and Dresdner Kammerchor, features two penitential psalms Miserere, separated by nearly a century of composition. Gregorio Allegri's Miserere was likely created in the 1630s and became one of the fascinating works that entered Zelenka's music collection. Zelenka added his own instrumental accompaniment to Allegri's original a cappella double-choir composition - in this arrangement, he most likely premiered it in Dresden in 1733.

Jan Dismas Zelenka composed his Miserere in D minor as part of a commission for compositions for Holy Week in 1722. The work demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint and melodic invention, and contains musical rebuses that scholars and musicians have puzzled over for years.
