Brno in the Age of Stalinism — Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes Brno, Brno

A guided historical walk with Martin Koplík, who will lead you through the dark periods of Brno's history.

After World War II, Brno faced a new totalitarian system - this time communist. The Communist Party gradually seized power from May 1945 onwards, so for many, February 1948 came as no surprise. What followed, however, exceeded all expectations - action committees quickly took control of offices, factories, schools, and public institutions. Arrests began, nationalization swept through the economy, and communist propaganda permeated society. The harsh years of Stalinism had arrived, marked by political trials and fundamental social transformation.

The walk through the city traces significant places, events, and figures from 1948-1953. It recalls centers of power, sites of repression and terror, as well as the gentler face of the totalitarian regime. During the walk, you will visit forgotten places in Brno where the fate of all Czechoslovakia was often decided.

The walk, curated by historian Michal Konečný, is led by Martin Koplík. Duration: 90 minutes.
