The African Queen
Bolka Polívka Theatre – White House, Brno
A story of love and war.
It would be hard to find a more mismatched pair. He is a seasoned sailor who has seen it all aboard his ship, the African Queen, and wants nothing more than to enjoy life in peace. She, on the other hand, has spent her entire life sheltered - a proper clergyman's daughter who yearns for adventure, naturally within the bounds of respectable middle-class morality.
By a twist of fate, they find themselves on the same ship, surrounded by enemies. They get in each other's way, irritate one another, and disagree on almost everything - drinking alcohol, singing hymns, how to face the German threat, even what patriotic duty means. Yet somehow they manage to navigate dangerous rapids together, survive enemy fire, treacherous shallows, and mosquito attacks - and from their initial hostility emerges a great love.
This humorous and dramatic tale of what a clever woman can accomplish for the sake of a man in love unfolds in Africa during the First World War and has been entertaining audiences for years.
