LiStOVáNí.cz: Love and Body

In one of his final works, Arnošt Lustig attempts a reckoning with themes that have marked his entire body of work - the incomprehensibility of Nazi ideology aimed at the extermination of Jews on one hand, and love of life and all things physical on the other. The main characters, young people full of bodily desires Gabriela Lágusová and Josef Reinisch, experience their forbidden love in the Theresienstadt ghetto. Transport could arrive any day, so they find solace in each other - they live fully and speak things they might never have said under other circumstances. They survive as long as they have each other's bodies. The result is a story full of declarations of love and philosophical reflections on the meaning of life.
