A farmer named Matush receives a visit from Vasek, a musician and former bandmate from one of the best cimbalom orchestras. Matush, himself a former musician, learns that the musicians he once played with are breaking up and have decided to disband at the end of the month. He recalls a tradition that existed in their band: "if any member has a wedding in the family, the other guys play for free". When Matush's wife hears about this custom, she decides she must arrange a wedding for her eldest daughter Jolana before month's end, so she can have one of the best orchestras play for free and get revenge on her longtime rival Bozena, who had a grander wedding and never lets her forget it.
However, daughter Jolana is reluctant to marry, so her mother devises a plan and brings her husband Matush in on it. Without their daughter's knowledge, they place a personal ad in the newspaper on her behalf. Matush is tasked with delivering the ad to the newspaper along with another ad - one advertising their cow for sale.
