Furoshiki Workshop: Gift in a Gift — Česko-japonská společnost, Prague

Workshop on the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in a square furoshiki cloth.

When: 27 November 2026, 17:30-18:30
Where: Na Můstku 8, Prague 1, 4th floor, large classroom
Instructor: Klára Poskočilová, costume designer at Kyogen Theatre and programme director of the Eigasai film festival

Furoshiki is a Japanese technique for wrapping gifts in a square cloth. With just a few knots, an ordinary object becomes a practical art form - the cloth doesn't end up in the bin like used paper, but can be transformed after unwrapping into a handbag, book cover, bottle bag, or another gift.

The history of furoshiki dates back to the 16th century, possibly earlier: visitors to traditional public baths would carry their clothes and belongings in such cloths, often marked with family crests. The colours and patterns have their own meaning, so a furoshiki can itself be a gift, especially for lovers of Japanese culture.

The workshop is suitable for participants aged 12 and up. The price includes a theoretical introduction, practical instruction in tying with the instructor's assistance, and one cotton furoshiki cloth 50x50 cm with a design of your choice, brought directly from Japan, which you take home. Additional cloths from Japan in sizes 50x50 cm or 70x70 cm will be available for purchase on site.
