Beyond Memory: Brno's Closed Cemeteries
Obřany, sídliště, Brno
A guided bicycle tour tracing the history of Brno's closed cemeteries, led by art theorist and author of "Non-Places" Silvia Šeborová. Some of these sites are marked only by fragments of walls, abandoned crosses, or gates leading nowhere.
The closure of old cemeteries in Brno occurred in waves: in 1785, the Vienna government ordered the closure of all cemeteries within settlements and densely built areas; another wave came in 1883 with the establishment of the Central Cemetery; and many cemeteries disappeared in 1962 following a health ministry decree on burial practices.
Planned route:
- Obřany Cemetery, a plot on the slope above Fryčajova Street
- Maloměřice Cemetery, now the Maloměřice Linden Alley
- Husovice Cemetery, now Marie Restituty Park
Participation is recommended for physically fit individuals; appropriate footwear, a bicycle helmet, and plenty of water are advised. Bicycles can be rented through a partnership with Rekola Bikesharing.
