Architecture Day: Prague - Kolonie Svoboda — Slovenská 1725/37, nad schodištěm, Prague

A guided tour of a residential complex built between 1922-1925 by architect František Albert Libra. The tour is led by architectural historian Radomíra Sedláková.

The complex was created for the Družstvo Svépomoc cooperative between present-day Hradešínská and Na Šafránce streets as an example of loosely-planned residential development inspired by the English garden city concept. Its construction was linked to Prague's expansion following the creation of Greater Prague in 1922 and the development of the newly annexed suburbs.

The older section of the colony on Hradešínská street features elements of decorative national style - the Czechoslovak variant of art deco - while the houses on Na Šafránce street have more restrained classicizing facades. The complex also includes the architect's former residence with his studio, marking 135 years since F. A. Libra's birth.
