Architecture Day: Prague - Jižní Město
A guided walk through Prague's largest housing estate with architecture popularizer Matouš Pudil. Jižní Město - connected to the historic villages of Háje and Opatov - is a symbol of residential construction from the second half of the 20th century and one of the most interesting urban planning projects of its era.
The original plan envisioned a virtually independent city for up to 100,000 residents, divided into several districts, each with its own centre, cultural and social facilities, and sufficient employment opportunities. Today, over 80,000 people live here - Jižní Město would rank almost among the ten largest Czech cities on its own.
The walk will focus on the boulevards, parks, hidden corners and artworks of the estate, and will explore where innovative ideas from the original plans succeeded and where the pressure for quantity and speed of construction prevailed.
