Architecture Day: Opava - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - 140 Years Since Birth
A lecture on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of his birth, led by architectural historian Martin Pavlíček.
Mies van der Rohe ranks among the most significant figures in modern architecture. A turning point in his career came with the realization of the German Pavilion in Barcelona, where he collaborated with architect and designer Lilly Reich and simultaneously worked on the Tugendhat Villa project in Brno. This building secured his place in the history of Czechoslovak interwar architecture and influenced numerous local architects, including Bohuslav Fuchs and Pavel Janák. From 1930 to 1933 he led the Bauhaus art school; after its closure, he was forced to emigrate to the United States under political pressure, where he worked as both educator and architect, profoundly shaping the American and global architectural scene. He also addressed housing for middle and lower-income classes, designing some of the first modernist housing estates.
The event is co-organized by the Association for Opava and the SAM Association.
