Participatory Art Mediation 2: The Image of Humanity

Veletržní palác, Prague

What can be read from a face? And what remains hidden? How does the way we depict ourselves and others transform?

The second meeting in the series of participatory art mediations will guide participants through the exhibition 1796–1918: Art of the Long Century, specifically into the section devoted to the theme of humanity. We will focus on portraits and self-portraits as one of the key ways artists captured likeness, identity, and the position of people in society — from representative depictions to more intimate portrayals of everyday life and social roles. The programme will also explore changes in perspectives on individuality in relation to social transformations, such as questions of identity and the position of women.

The meeting will conclude with a shared art mediation session in which participants offer others their personal interpretation of a selected work. The programme is built on sharing, dialogue, and voluntary participation — everyone can choose their level of involvement.

The session will be led by Alena Kotyza, educator at the National Gallery Prague, and Nikola Ludlová, coordinator for inclusion and sustainability at the Jindřích Chalupecký Society. Further dates in the series will take place on 14 June, 13 September, 18 October, and 22 November, each in different exhibitions at the Trade Fair Palace. Separate registration is required for each date.
