The House on Kaprova Street
Kino Ponrepo, Prague
A film shot at Barrandov Studios, set in Prague, featuring a cast of renowned Czech actors, cinematography by Josef Illík, and music by Zdeněk Liška. Produced as a West German production, it is one of Jana Brejchová's most successful foreign films. An adaptation of stories by Israeli author Ben-Gavriêl, the narrative unfolds during the first year of Nazi occupation in Prague's Jewish Quarter.
Filming took place in autumn 1963, and the film reached West German audiences over three March evenings in 1965 on the first programme of ARD television. The decision to edit the work and release it as a feature film in cinemas proved highly successful: the film received outstanding critical acclaim and was named Best Film of the Year at the German Film Awards in June.
