Architecture Day: Bruntál - City of Three Gates

A guided walk along the line of the former city fortifications and adjacent residential buildings with historian Igor Hornišer.

Until 1826, the city of Bruntál was enclosed by ramparts. Following their gradual demolition and the destruction of all three city gates, the textile industry experienced rapid growth. Entrepreneurs from the Marburg, Plischke, Machold, Berl, and Olbrich families came to the fore - and in the previously sleepy town full of shingled roofs and high gables, factory chimneys, ostentatious bourgeois buildings, and the first unified residential quarters began to appear.

Among the architects of individual projects were Vienna architect Josef Hofmann, Ignác Wiesinger, Rudolf Saliger, Paul Gruner, and Wilhelm Schön. By 1916, Bruntál's appearance had changed dramatically - yet today, remnants of the fortifications can still be found in the city's urban fabric, where people lived at the beginning of the 20th century.
