Quarterback Jack Rooney (Quaid) of the Miami Sharks suffers an injury, prompting coach Tony D'Amato (Pacino) to send young, arrogant quarterback Willie Beamen (Foxx) onto the field. Over three games, Willie earns money and gains fame.

Complications arise when it becomes clear that Jack will be able to return and play again. The uncompromising team owner Christina Pagniacci (Diaz) stands in opposition.
