Dejvice - From Art Nouveau to 21st-Century Architecture

A guided walk with Martin Bělohradský exploring Art Nouveau and modernist architecture around Dejvická Street, functionalist schools and family homes between "Kulaťák" and Staré Dejvice, and buildings of the Charles University of Technology and University of Chemistry and Technology campuses.

On the border of Bubeneč and Dejvice you will see restored Art Nouveau facades of apartment buildings and houses in the Kotěra Modern style designed by his students. The route shows where Semafor is located today, where you can sit on a bench next to Spejbl and Hurvínek in front of their theatre, and reveals rondocubist remnants of the originally extensive Officials' Colony near the school building of the Edvard Beneš Gymnasium by Evžen Linhart. You will also learn why Hadovka has nothing to do with snakes - just as Vlčnovka has nothing to do with wolves. The walk continues with monumental buildings of the Charles University of Technology, the Technical Library and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences, and ends at Victory Square, whose name changed three times in the 20th century according to the political regime.
