Museum of Prague, Prague

lecture culture

Prague is more than just a city of streets, buildings, and monuments. Its story lies beneath the surface of the earth, in historical documents, in museum collections, and in the everyday lives of its inhabitants. The Layers of Prague lecture series offers a view of the city from different perspectives and presents its past in unexpected contexts.

About the venue: Museum of Prague

The Museum of Prague is a city-funded institution documenting the history of Prague from prehistoric times to the present, founded in 1881. Its main building on Florenc was built in Neo-Renaissance style to a design by architect Antonín Balšánek and opened in 1900; after a five-year reconstruction it reopened in early 2026. The most prized exhibit is Antonín Langweil's hand-crafted paper model of Prague from the first half of the 19th century. The museum also manages several other sites, including Clam-Gallas Palace, the House at the Golden Ring, Müller Villa, and Ctěnice Château.
