Psychedelic Medicine in the Sacred Landscape of Huichol and Wixárica Culture

A lecture, screening and discussion on the traditional use of sacred medicines in Huichol and Wixárica community culture in central Mexico: tradition, healing and current threats.

The evening hosts Eduardo Guzmán Chávez - a shaman, healer and author of the Tanque Valentín restoration project in Wirikuta. Wirikuta is a desert landscape with a thousand-year tradition of healing connected to peyote (Lophophora williamsii), a cactus containing mescaline. For the Wixárika people, it is sacred land where, according to their tradition, the creation of the world and the birth of the Sun took place.

Eduardo will bring a message from a community where human health is inseparably linked to caring for nature - and where at the same time a political struggle is taking place to preserve the local ecosystem. The perspective of traditional medicine will be complemented by the perspective of contemporary clinical medicine and psychedelic care.

The discussion will address the rights of indigenous communities, the protection of their cultural and natural heritage, and the regulation and use of psychedelics in contemporary care.
