The Magic Flute (Prague Summer Nights)
Mozart's "The Magic Flute" performed by the National Theatre during the Prague Summer Nights festival.
The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) is a two-act opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, premiered on 30 September 1791 at the Freihaustheater in Vienna - just three months before the composer's death. The work follows Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno as they undergo a series of initiation trials to rescue Princess Pamina. Blending fairy-tale fantasy, Masonic symbolism and music of extraordinary range - from the Queen of the Night's fearsome coloratura to Papageno's folksy tunes - it ranks among the most frequently performed operas in the world.
