Pietro Metastasio (1698–1782) was an Italian poet and opera librettist, widely regarded as the most influential figure in the opera seria genre. His texts were set to music by hundreds of composers, including Handel, Vivaldi, Haydn, and Mozart. He spent much of his life as court poet in Vienna.
