Othello

About

Othello is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, written around 1603, following the Moorish general Othello whose marriage to Desdemona is destroyed by the jealousy and scheming of his ensign Iago. It ranks among Shakespeare's most frequently staged works, exploring jealousy, manipulation and racial identity. In the Czech Republic it has a rich performance history dating back to 1842. The 2025 Summer Shakespeare Festival production, directed by Braňo Holiček, starred Robert Mikluš in the title role.

In August 2025, Othello was performed as part of the Summer Shakespeare Festivals in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, and Bratislava.

The premiere of the Othello production directed by Braňa Holíček took place on June 25, 2025 at Prague Castle as the opening of the Summer Shakespeare Festivals.

The cast was announced: General Othello will be played by Robert Mikluš, Desdemona by Sara Sandeva, and the role of Iago alternating between Jan Cina and Vojtěch Vodochodský.

Prague Shakespeare Company presents Othello in English with Czech subtitles at the National Theatre directed by Guy Roberts with music by Patrick Neil Doyle.
