The National Theatre in Prague is the Czech Republic's representative stage and one of the most enduring symbols of Czech national identity. The neo-Renaissance building on the Vltava embankment was funded by a nationwide public collection, first opened in 1881 with the premiere of Smetana's opera Libuše, and rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1883. Today it runs four artistic ensembles - Opera, Ballet, Drama and Laterna magika - across four venues: the historic main building, the State Opera, the Estates Theatre and the New Stage.
